The Michigan State Spartans had an excellent season in 2010, going 11-2 SU overall and 7-1 SU in the Big Ten, winning a share of the conference title for the first time in 20 years, and going to the Capital One Bowl, where they were blown out 49-7 by the Alabama Crimson Tide.

And the Spartans, who finished the season ranked No. 14 in both the AP Top 25 and the USA Today Poll, appear primed to have another great year, although they return just 12 starters.

College Football Betting Odds have MSU at 10-1 to win the Big Ten championship, and at 50-1 to win the BCS championship.

The offense returns six starters, including its most important piece, quarterback Kirk Cousins, who had 2,825 passing yards and 20 touchdowns last season. And he’ll have one of his favorite targets back in BJ Cunningham, who had a career season last year with 50 catches for 611 yards and nine touchdowns.

The ground game is also solid with running back Edwin Baker, who also had his best season with 207 carries for 1,201 yards and 14 majors.

But there are some significant holes, with replacements needed for WRs Mark Dell and Charlie Gantt, as well as on the line, where Michigan State loses three starters, including center John Stipek and both tackles.

On defense, six starters are back, but there are even bigger holes to fill than there are on the offensive side of the ball.

The Spartans lose All-American linebackers Greg Jones, taken by the New York Giants in the 2011 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, and Eric Gordon, who was second-team All-Big Ten selection after getting 92 tackles last year.

MSU gets DE Tyler Hoover and tackle Jerel Worthy back on the line, and also two standouts in the secondary, free safety Trenton Robinson and cornerback Johnny Adams.

Michigan State should once again challenge for top spot in the Big Ten, and should no lower than 3rd.
